Sending money from Turkey to Iran

Hand over lira, dollars, euros or USDT in Turkey and receive the toman equivalent in an Iranian account; the rate is fixed before execution.

Sending money from Turkey to Iran is the reverse of a transfer to Turkey: you hand over lira, dollars, euros or USDT in Turkey, and the toman equivalent is deposited to a bank account in Iran. The need arises for people who live in Turkey and must support family or meet obligations back home, and for those who want to convert money earned in Turkey into toman.

EL DÖVİZ offers this route with the same logic as everything else it does: the rate and fee are quoted before execution, you confirm, and only then are the currency handed over and the toman deposited. Below you will find who this service suits, how you can hand over the money in Turkey, how it is received in Iran and the exact moment at which the rate becomes firm.

Who needs to send money from Turkey to Iran?

Residents and their families

Iranians who work or live in Turkey and send part of their income to Iran for family, instalments, rent or everyday costs. For this group a stable routine usually matters more than any single rate: the same steps, the same transparency and a receipt every time.

Students

A student who, after graduating or during a holiday, wants to turn the remaining balance of a lira account into toman; or, the other way round, a family that needs in Iran an amount the student received in Turkey.

Selling property or a car, or closing a contract

If you have sold a flat or a car in Turkey, the proceeds are usually sitting in your lira account. The transfer to Iran is made from that same account, and because the amount is large it is best to state the source of the funds (the sale document or contract) in the enquiry from the start so the appropriate route can be proposed.

Salaries and foreign-currency income

Freelancers, employees of Turkish companies and anyone paid in dollars or USDT who spends part of that income in Iran. For this group the USDT route is often simpler than moving banknotes; it is described below.

Ways to hand over the money in Turkey

Cash in Istanbul

If you hold cash lira, dollars or euros, you can hand it over in person. The place and time are arranged after your enquiry is reviewed, and the notes are counted and checked in your presence. For large amounts, cash is not always the best option; ask in your enquiry so the other options are considered too.

Lira from a Turkish bank account

If you have a lira account with a Turkish bank, you can transfer the amount to the account communicated to you after confirmation. For people whose salary or sale proceeds are in the bank, this is the most direct route, and your bank receipt serves as proof of delivery. If you do not have an account yet, the guide to opening a bank account in Turkey explains the prerequisites.

Paying in USDT

If your funds are in USDT or you receive your income in crypto, you can send USDT to the address communicated to you and receive the toman equivalent in Iran. The network (TRC20 or ERC20) and delivery details are on the USDT exchange in Istanbul page, and the USDT reference rate is on the USDT rate today in toman page.

How the money is received in Iran

The toman amount is deposited to the Iranian bank account you name. The account holder's name and the Sheba (the Iranian IBAN) or card number are enough. The account may be in your own name or that of someone you designate, for example a family member in Iran who needs the money.

If the account holder is someone other than you, make sure the name matches the bank's records exactly; Iranian banks match deposits against the holder's name, and a small spelling difference can cause an avoidable return. Ask the recipient for these details directly, preferably as text, and check them once more during the final confirmation before the deposit.

Two notes that prevent confusion:

  • The amount is quoted in toman; if you are more comfortable with rial, the rial equivalent is stated too, so nothing gets mixed up when you compare it with the bank record.
  • If the amount must be split across several accounts, say so in the enquiry from the start so the conditions can be assessed.

More on the receiving options and how they compare is in the guide to sending money from Turkey to Iran.

How the rate is locked

This is the question people moving a significant sum ask most, because the toman rate of the lira and the dollar changes during the day. The process at EL DÖVİZ is as follows:

  1. In the quote form you state the currency you will hand over, the amount and the delivery method.
  2. After review, you are told the proposed rate, the fee and the net toman amount you will receive, together with the period for which the offer is valid.
  3. If you confirm within that period and hand over or deposit the currency, that rate is fixed for your request and becomes the basis of the toman deposit.
  4. If the period lapses or the market moves noticeably, the rate is quoted again and you decide again.

In other words, the rate is locked by your confirmation and the delivery of the currency, not by sending the enquiry. The figure in the Turkish lira to toman rate today table is a market reference rate and is enough for a first estimate, but the firm rate is always the one quoted in the reply.

Steps of a transfer from Turkey to Iran

  1. Enquiry: State the currency you will hand over (lira, dollars, euros or USDT), the amount and the delivery method in the form, and send the prepared text.
  2. Terms: The rate, the fee, the toman amount you will receive and the validity period of the offer are communicated to you.
  3. Confirmation and delivery: If you agree, you send the Iranian account details and hand over or deposit the currency by the method chosen.
  4. Toman deposit and receipt: Once receipt of the currency is confirmed, the toman is deposited to the account named and the deposit record is sent to you.

No step is taken before your confirmation, and the reply to an enquiry binds neither side.

Documents

For a personal transfer this is usually enough:

  • Your details and the delivery method (cash, a Turkish bank account or a USDT wallet),
  • The holder's name and the Sheba or card number of the destination account in Iran,
  • For large amounts, or funds from a property sale or a contract, a document showing the source of the funds.

Exactly which document your request needs is confirmed after review. A card PIN, an SMS verification code or a full image of a bank card is never requested; if anyone asks for such things in the name of EL DÖVİZ, ignore it and verify through the official channel.

Which currency should you hand over?

Handing over the money in whatever form you already hold it is usually the simplest; converting it to lira or dollars first and then sending it generally adds one more conversion step. Still, three cases are worth telling apart:

  • Lira: If your salary or sale proceeds are in a lira account, hand over or deposit lira directly; the rate is quoted as lira to toman.
  • Dollars or euros: If you hold cash, you can hand it over in person; the toman value of each currency is quoted separately. The condition of the notes is checked at handover, and the terms for worn or marked notes are stated in the reply.
  • USDT: If your income arrives in crypto, there is nothing to carry and no need to meet in person; the rate is quoted as USDT to toman.

If you are not sure which suits you better, put both currencies in the enquiry and compare the two net toman amounts yourself.

A few notes before you send the enquiry

  • Compare the toman amount, not just the rate. Look at the net toman figure with the fee already taken into account.
  • Match the delivery method to the amount. Cash is simple for small sums; for larger ones a bank transfer or USDT leaves a clearer record.
  • State the source of the funds. Salary, property sale, freelance income or savings; saying so helps the right route be chosen.
  • Do not accept street conversions. Informal, receipt-less exchanges carry the risk of counterfeit notes and cannot be traced if something goes wrong.

How this differs from selling lira cash in Iran

Some travellers carry their leftover lira to Iran and sell it there. For small amounts that is easy; for larger ones it raises three problems: the legal limit on currency carried by passengers, a buying rate for lira in Iran that is usually some distance from the rate in Turkey, and the risk of carrying cash on the way. A transfer from Turkey to Iran removes all three: the currency is handed over in Turkey, the toman lands in an account in Iran, with a receipt and a rate agreed in advance. If you only have a little lira left over, selling lira in Istanbul is the simpler option.

The other direction: lira transfers to Turkey

If instead you are sending from Iran and need lira in Turkey, the lira transfers to Turkey page explains the methods, documents and steps of that route separately.

To begin, state the currency, the amount and the delivery method in the quote form. After review, EL DÖVİZ quotes the rate and the toman amount you will receive, and nothing is executed until you confirm.

  • Hand over lira, dollars, euros or USDT in Turkey
  • Rate and the toman amount you receive are confirmed first
  • Toman deposited to the Iranian bank account you name

Frequently asked questions

Do I have to hand over the money in person in Istanbul?

No. You can deposit lira from your Turkish bank account or send USDT. Handing over cash is only one of the options and is arranged according to the city and the amount.

Whose account does the toman go to?

The Iranian bank account you name; it can be your own or a family member's. The account holder's name and the Sheba (IBAN) or card number are enough.

When does the rate become firm?

Once you confirm the quoted rate within the stated period and hand over or deposit the currency. Until then the quote is an offer and may be updated as the market moves.

How is the fee for a transfer to Iran worked out?

It depends on the currency, the amount and the delivery method, and it is quoted before execution. The net toman amount you will receive is stated in the same reply.

Can I convert freelance income or a salary as well?

Yes, as long as you hold it in lira, dollars, euros or USDT. Mention the source of the funds in your enquiry so the right route can be proposed.

Is the rate in the site's table the transfer rate?

No. The table shows a market reference rate and is only for an initial estimate. The firm rate is quoted after your enquiry is reviewed.

Is the amount stated in toman or rial?

In toman; the rial equivalent is given as well if you ask, so there is no confusion when you check the bank record.

This service structure is proposed; each service, currency and destination requires operator confirmation.
