"How much does a month in Istanbul cost?" is the question people ask most often before moving here to study, work or raise a family, and the question relatives in Iran ask before sending money. The honest answer is that there is no single number: Istanbul is a city where rent can differ several-fold between two districts, and where inflation moves every figure month by month.
Instead of a "magic number", this article puts a few official, dated anchors side by side so that you can build your own budget: the 2026 minimum wage, the public transport tariff, average rent and the inflation rate. Every figure is in lira with its month and is valid at the time of writing (October 2026). Where no figure exists, we say how to estimate it yourself rather than guessing.
Why no figures in toman?
Many readers think in toman, yet there is not a single toman figure in this text; that is deliberate. The lira-to-toman rate changes daily, sometimes hourly, and any toman amount written today will mislead a few weeks later. The right method is to convert the lira figures below at the moment you need them. The Turkish lira rate today table exists for exactly that: it shows the market reference rate, and with it you can turn your whole monthly budget into toman in seconds. If you intend to buy lira or send a transfer, the firm rate for each request is quoted separately, before anything is done.
The official, dated figures in one table
| Item | Figure or how to estimate it | Reference month |
|---|---|---|
| Net monthly minimum wage | 28,075.50 TL (gross 33,030 TL), fixed for all of 2026 | December 2025 |
| One İstanbulkart ride (full fare) | 46.20 TL | from 20 July 2026 |
| Full monthly transport pass | 3,628 TL | from 20 July 2026 |
| Average housing rent in Istanbul | 45,510 TL per month (Türkiye average 28,040 TL) | August 2026 |
| Legal cap on rent increases at renewal | 31.49% | October 2026 |
| Annual inflation (CPI) | 29.73%; housing and energy 39.99%, transport 35.10%, food 27.62% | September 2026 |
| Groceries, utilities, internet, phone, tuition | No single official figure; estimate as a share of the minimum wage or ask the provider | — |
Keep this table as the skeleton of your budget. Below we go through each item and say where your own research has to fill the gaps.
Rent: the biggest line
The average housing rent in Istanbul was about 45,510 TL per month in August 2026, more than sixty percent above the Türkiye-wide average. It is an average, and for personal planning it has to be adjusted in two directions.
The district changes everything
Outer districts on the European side such as Esenyurt sit at the bottom of the market; central and waterfront districts on both sides of the Bosphorus sit at the top. A small flat far out can rent for a fraction of the city average, while the same floor area in the centre costs several times more. Before choosing, weigh the commute to your university or workplace: cheaper rent is sometimes paid back in transport cost and time.
New contract or renewal?
For renewals of existing contracts, a legal cap on the increase is announced each month from the twelve-month average of inflation; for October 2026 renewals it was 31.49%. A new contract has no such cap and is priced by agreement, which is why long-standing tenants usually pay below market and newcomers pay today's price.
What gets added to the rent
- Deposit: usually one or two months' rent at the start of the contract; the exact amount depends on the agreement and the district.
- Agency fee: renting through an estate agent carries a separate commission.
- Building charge (aidat): in large compounds with pools and security it can be substantial and is normally paid separately from rent.
- Utilities: water, electricity, gas and internet are almost always outside the rent.
Transport: the most transparent item
Public transport is the one item with an official, uniform tariff. At the time of writing, a full İstanbulkart ride costs 46.20 TL and the full monthly pass 3,628 TL (from 20 July 2026; between 16 February and that date the full fare was 42 TL). The monthly pass is a little under thirteen percent of the net minimum wage; if you commute daily by metro, metrobus or bus, the pass almost always beats paying per ride.
Students get a separate and much cheaper tariff with a student card, also published in the municipality's official schedule. Taxis and ride-hailing have no fixed price and vary with distance and traffic; if you will use them every day, budget them as a separate, variable line.
Food and everyday shopping
There is no single official figure for food, but there is an official indicator: in September 2026, food and non-alcoholic beverage prices were 27.62% higher than a year earlier. In practice this means any estimate you heard from friends or read in last year's articles should be raised by about that much.
A few rules decide the share of food in a budget:
- Cooking at home versus eating out: the biggest budget gap between two people on similar incomes comes from here.
- Neighbourhood markets (semt pazarı): the weekly street markets are usually cheaper than chain supermarkets for fruit and vegetables.
- Discount chains: present in every district and suitable for the basic weekly shop.
A practical way to estimate: write down everything you buy in your first week and multiply by four; that number is more accurate than any average found online.
Bills, internet and phone
The "housing and energy" group had the highest inflation among the main groups in September 2026, at 39.99% year on year, so bills have risen faster than the average. What decides the bills budget:
- Heating: homes with natural gas have high gas bills in winter and almost none in summer; think of the budget yearly, not monthly.
- Home internet: monthly subscriptions come with fixed-term contracts; ask the operators for prices.
- Mobile: a SIM card in your own name needs a passport and usually a tax number, and long-term use of a phone brought from abroad requires an IMEI registration with a separate official fee that changes every year.
Tuition and student costs
University fees in Türkiye have no single figure: state universities apply a separate tariff for international students that each university sets itself, and private (foundation) universities usually quote fees in dollars or euros or their lira equivalent. The only reliable source is the official page of that university for that programme and academic year.
Alongside tuition, housing is the student's biggest variable: a state dormitory, a private dormitory or a room in a shared flat produce completely different budgets. To pay tuition from Iran, see paying Turkish university tuition; documents and steps are confirmed case by case.
Three scenarios: how to assemble the skeleton
Rather than a final number, here is the budget composition for each group, to be filled in with the figures above and your own local research.
Student
A room in a shared flat or a dormitory (a fraction of the city's average rent), a student transport pass, home cooking, shared internet and tuition paid per term. The student's biggest financial decision is how far from the university to live.
Single professional
A one-bedroom or studio flat (near the city average, above it in central districts), a monthly transport pass or variable taxi costs, more eating out, and the full utilities of one unit. Comparing with the net minimum wage helps here: if rent alone exceeds the minimum wage, reconsider the district or the size.
Family
A two- or three-bedroom flat, two transport passes or a car, groceries for several people, school (state schools are free subject to residence, private schools charge fees), insurance and healthcare. For a family, the building charge and the winter heating bill take a larger share than they appear to at first glance.
Getting the money to Istanbul
Once the monthly budget is set in lira, the next question is how to get it there from Iran. Direct bank wires between the two countries are not available and cash carried by travellers is subject to legal declaration limits; both are explained in the guide to sending money from Iran to Turkey.
For monthly expenses, the common route is a lira transfer to Turkey into your own bank account or that of someone you trust in Istanbul; if you have just arrived and have no account yet, buying lira in person is the first option. In both cases the rate and fee are confirmed before anything is done, and nothing moves until you approve. Frequently asked questions
How much does a month in Istanbul cost?
There is no single figure; rent is the biggest item and varies several-fold between districts. At the time of writing, the average Istanbul housing rent in August 2026 was about 45,510 TL and the 2026 net minimum wage 28,075.50 TL; estimate the other items against those two anchors.
Why does this article not give figures in toman?
Because the lira-to-toman rate changes every day and any toman figure written today misleads a few weeks later. The figures are in lira with their month; convert them at the moment you need with the site's live rate table.
How much can rent go up each year in Istanbul?
For renewals of existing contracts a legal cap is announced monthly from the twelve-month average of inflation; for October 2026 renewals it was 31.49%. New contracts have no cap and are agreed freely.

How do I get living money from Iran to Istanbul?
Direct bank wires from Iran are not available. The usual route is a lira transfer through an exchange office to your own Turkish account, or buying lira in person; the rate and fee are confirmed before anything is done, and cash carried by travellers has legal declaration limits.
